About the Work

What is the idea behind the project you have submitted to Architectural Challenge 2022?

As we mention in our design, self-sufficiency is very important in cycling tourism, especially during this time when most families in Europe pay a lot in energy expenses. On the other hand, energy facilities along the cycling tourism line are limited due to construction costs. Hence, a cycling complex with energy produced roof is a good choice.

What are the solutions/things you’d like to emphasize in your proposed project?

Self-sufficient and sustainability is the soul of this design.

What did you find the most challenging in the task?

Problem definition. Ryterna already has great modular unit products, so what can we bring into this complex. We have to find the problem.

As an architect, what benefits do you see in modular units?

Architecture and production joined as whole new objects.

About Their architectural experience

Briefly describe your experience in architecture.

TAG is founded in New York City in US and do a lot of practise in China. Our chief architect, Wang is assisstant professor in Tongji University which is TOP3 in architecture major in China, and Wu got his master degree in Center of Architecture Science and Ecology in RPI. We try to mix our design projects and research work together, and combine architecture and science together.

Have you worked with modular construction projects before?

Yes, in China, we have done one small hotel and one pavillion with modular construction technics.

Could you name some of the greatest architecture projects your company/you have implemented previously?

Triangle house/Double house/Red house, you can see in Archdaily and goooood.cn,or in our website:www.t-a-g.cn

About their team

Which country and city are you from?

China

Do you notice a growing demand for modular construction in your country?

Yes, due to  technology/labor costs/construction limits, modular products are more and more popular in China

Do you often cycle yourself? How personally relevant was the topic of the Competition to you?

Yes, we do cycle almost every day

Why did you decide to take part in this competition?

Modular products, we have been interested in this topic for a long time and regard this competition as a good opportunity to use our ideas

2nd place winners are:

About the Work

What is the idea behind the project you have submitted to Architectural Challenge 2022?

The idea came from the velodrome where cyclists compete for their speed in a circular circuit.

It matches the program, and clarify the shape and the organization of the complex.

What are the solutions/things you’d like to emphasize in your proposed project?

The structure of the modules are identical maximizing production efficiency.

A sense of unity is created by this strict repetition bringing all the users to the same level of importance.

What did you find the most challenging in the task?

To create variety in the repetition by adapting the units to its program.

As an architect, what benefits do you see in modular units?

Cost efficiency, upgrade of working conditions, and quality control.

Have you worked with modular construction projects before?

No, the closest to a modular construction would be a CLT structure house which was prefabricated in an atelier and assembled on-site.

Could you name some of the greatest architecture projects your company/you have implemented previously?

We participated in the European parliament competition in Brussels for the office Moreau Kusunoki in 2021

Do you notice a growing demand for modular construction in your country?

We notice a strong demand for environmentally responsible construction, which can be achieved by modular construction.

Do you often cycle yourself? How personally relevant was the topic of the Competition to you?

We cycle every day to go to work, the topic was very easy to appropriate.

Why did you decide to take part in this competition?

To explore the potential of a circular complex made of bent modules, an idea that came early in the design phase.

About the work

What is the idea behind the project you have submitted to Architectural Challenge 2022?

The idea was to provide a solution that would use the modular units in the most interesting way and that would be an example of sustainable architecture. The form was inspired by a bicycle's architecture and the circular movement of its parts.

What are the solutions/things you’d like to emphasize in your proposed project?

1. Placing modules in a circular grid creates different types of terraces and "pockets" that allow users to enjoy the surrounding nature in multiple ways. It also creates round squares which serve as a circulation that can be either completely private or semi-public.

2. Elevating the complex 1 meter above the ground on a pile foundation gives a sense of privacy for the users and at the same time, it allows the natural habitats on the site to flourish almost uninterrupted, so architecture and nature can exist in harmony.

3. By using wooden units, the complex has a low carbon footprint and a cozy and relaxing feeling.

What did you find the most challenging in the task?

The main challenge was to come up with a solution that would be both inviting to the public as well as safe and private for overnight visitors.

As an architect, what benefits do you see in modular units?

I find the design process much easier and faster while using repetitive modules with defined dimensions.

Moreover, my mission as an architect is to create sustainable and environment-friendly architecture, and using modular units can help to reach that goal. Units can be placed on site very fast and without heavy equipment, which saves time, costs, and energy. Also, they can be easily reused or recycled.

About Your architectural experience

I studied for both my Bachelor's and Master's degree in Poland and during that time I did exchanges in Spain, South Korea, and the United States. I worked in OMA in Rotterdam, in BIG in Copenhagen, and in White Arkitekter in Stockholm, where I am currently employed.

Briefly describe your experience in architecture.

I have worked mostly in architectural competitions and early design stages.

Have you worked with modular construction projects before?

It is my first project of this type.

Could you name some of the greatest architecture projects your company/you have implemented previously?

Here are a few projects based on the concept of modularity or using modular units:

OMA:

Norra Tornen in Stockholm

The Interlace in Singapore

BIG:

Urban rigger in Copenhagen

Dortheavej Residence in Copenhagen

White Arkitekter:

Hedge House in London

About Her:

Which country and city are you from?

I am from Poland and I am currently living in Sweden.

Do you notice a growing demand for modular construction in your country?

Modular units have been very popular in Sweden for many years and they are used both for smaller projects and for bigger residential buildings. They also becoming more and more popular in Poland and last few years I have seen many projects of residential buildings, smaller public buildings, and also hotels that use modular units.

Do you often cycle yourself? How personally relevant was the topic of the Competition to you?

Yes, I cycle very frequently and I used to live in Netherlands and Denmark where I cycled on daily basis. I enjoyed it a lot and I would be very happy if there were more facilities like the one from the competition brief to enjoy being part of the biking culture.  Also, most of the hostels and services for bike users are located in the city and it would be great if there were more also located in nature.

Why did you decide to take part in this competition?

The topic of cycling is close to me and I wanted to challenge myself and design my first project using modular units.

We are pretty happy with the results we got through this year's competition. Once again, CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of this year's competition from all of us at Ryterna Modul.

Our team here wishes All of You a season full of light and laughter, enjoy the gift of love. The gift of peace. The gift of happiness.
May all these be yours at Christmas.

Thank you & will see you soon!

Cycling in general is now gaining speed, in some countries it's not only a leisure transport, but a way of life (think of The Netherlands and Denmark). But extending our of these two countries, we see that cycling is in general increasing, it is no longer only "ride to the city", but even more, ride to a different country, or ride across my own country. Technology allows us to travel quicker, faster and in relative comfort compared to bikes that were used 20-30 years ago.

So this year we decided to focus on cyclists. and derived with the task:

To create a complex for cyclist travellers for a short stopover or even an overnight stay. The complex should have a bicycle repair area, a cafe or fast-food restaurant, accommodation (hostel and private type), and sanitary facilities for both passing cyclists and those staying overnight in hostel rooms.
